Sugar Sammy - You`re Going to Rire
On Friday, I went to see Sugar Sammy, You`re Gonna Rire show at the Olympia Theatre in Montreal. Growing up in a place that shares many cultures, religions and lifestyles as well as language issues, the show did a great job at representing the multicultural city of Montreal. I loved the fact that he used comedy to go beyond the norm.
I found Sammy Khular to be very charming. The fact that he grew up bilingual in Quebec and pretty much in same diversity, gave me an all around comfortable feeling with the show. With his good looks, well dressed manor and clear voice, he appeared at home on stage. His quick wit, facial and body expressions only added to the performance. Albeit he was sarcastic and at times was completely cocky, he connected with audience immediately. When it`s all in fun, it`s all about the laughter. I laughed a lot. He has been getting great reviews which I think are well deserved.
A quick note, don`t sit in the front rows, he might zoom in on you and then never let you go - lol.
To open the show was the talented DJ Yo-C. I would love to be in a club where this guy is playing. The mixing was amazing. It`s no wonder he has done parties for Bruce Willis and Hillary Duff. He had me dancing in my seat. Dan Bingham and Nile Seguin where pretty hilarious as well. They each brought something different to the show in completely different styles. You can click on there names to find them on facebook.
My only disappointment was that I was pretty unlucky. At 5`3, when a guy of 5`10 sits down in front of you at a comedy show you are pretty screwed - lol. Picture a tennis game, Sammy being the ball and the guy`s head blocking the view of the net. My body still hurts this morning from the contortions I had to maneuver to properly see the show - lol. That will teach me to check the seating plans before I order tickets.
I thought Sugar Sammy, the acts as well as the place made up a great package. Well worth the $55.00 sale. All in all, a wonderful evening. In case you haven`t heard, he just added some shows if you haven`t already gotten your tickets.
Before the show, I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Bistro 1272. I know I could have eaten at St-Hubert or Steak and Frites, which are great restaurants but I think I`m one that is always rooting for the underdog. The small restaurants that are sometimes overpowered by the corporate chains. Not crowded, it was elegant and comfortable. The server was experienced, the food was cooked to perfection and the desserts where mouth watering. There menu is online at www.bistro1272.com if ever you in the neighborhood.
